Heartbreaking! This book is beautifully written. The plot and characters grip you from the start. It has staying power and it's one of the best books I've read in a while.

The Cigar Factory

Again I've chosen a historical novel from the Book Nook. I've a facination with Charleston, SC, but have never been there. I have a connection to the south through my Mom's NC birth, her ancestors having immigrated to the U.S. through the port of Charleston, and my having lived in VA for 7 years. This is a great story of survival of both black and white people and gives insight to the 19th century Southern culture. I knew nothing about the manufacture of cigars until reading this book. The building where the factory was located has been rehabbed and today houses a number of businesses. I've come to understand that Charleston is big on historic Preservation.

Very interesting and a pretty quick read at 330 pages. Kept me guessing as to what was going on but a good ending, very satisfying. Just a good mystery, no blood and guts etc. Similar to a Hitchcock story.

The Ghostwriter

Main girl was literally the worst ?? Okay sooo The Ghost Writer by Julie Clark was kind of a mixed bag. The main character? Straight up unbearable. Like girl, be serious. I spent half the book mentally yelling at her and the other half wishing someone else was the lead. BUT—every time the book dipped into flashbacks or gave us other characters’ POVs? Instantly better. Those parts actually had depth and vibes. If the whole book had just been them, I’d probably be giving this 5 stars tbh. Mid overall, but not a total waste. Just be ready to suffer through the MC to get to the good stuff.

You completely love the main character. It is not only so well written that I can picture everything perfectly but shines a light on the horror of concentration camps well keeping it age appropriate.

Thought it would be a nice escapist graphic novel but it was literally about eating cicadas! Story of a group of women who open a restaurant that serves insects- for environmental and cultural motivations.
